Nikolay Alexeyev was born in Leningrad, Russia, in 1956. There he got his first musical education in the State Capella Glinka Choir College.The College affiliated to the St-Petersburg Conservatoire named after Rimsky-Korsakov in the classes of world-renown musicians A. V. Mikhaylov (choir conducting) and M. A. Yansons (opera-symphony conducting). After finishing the Conservatory Nikolai Alexeyev was invited as an assistant-conductor to the Kirov Theatre to work with Yuri Temirkanov.
Nikolay Alexeyev is the winner of the most prestigious International Herbert von Karajan Competition in 1983.
For 15 years he guided the Ulyanovsk Symphony Orchestra. He was the conductor of the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra, being also the main invited conductor of the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra. Since the season 2001-2002 he has become the artistic director and chief conductor of this orchestra.
His world tours with St.-Petersburg Philharmonic orchestra, with Estonian National Symphony Orchestra and best orchestras of Europe took places in Japan, USA, Portugal, Germany, Finland, Italy, Great Britain, France, etc
Since 2000 Nikolay Alexeyev has become the constant conductor of the St-Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra under Y.Temirkanov.
Since 2002 Nikolay Alexeyev is principal guest conductor of Bolshoy theater in Moscow.
Among other orchestras he conducts: Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, Dresdner Philharmonie Orchestra (Germany), “Goteborgs Symfoniker” (Sweden), Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra (UK), “Het Residentie Orkest” Haag, Netherlands Radio Symphony Orchestra, Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra (Netherlands), Danish Philharmonic Orchestra (Denmark), Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (USA), etc.
